Who we are

January 31st, 2010 § Leave a Comment

This is the first in a series of fortnightly “profiles” of people living in  North West Sheffield. Although NWS News Online has a couple of people already lined up for future pieces, we thought it unfair not to put “one of our own” on the spot first.

So … My name is Russell Cavanagh, and I’m publisher and editor of NWS News Online. A youthful 48 years old (just!!), I live near Stannington.

What do you like most about your job?
I love finding out what’s happening around the area, speaking to people and sharing information that’s useful or interesting. Pot of fresh black coffee on in the morning with laptop, phone and notepad all warming up and (hopefully) ready for the unexpected. Being a self-publishing journalist and photographer is a real joy.

Best/Worst day?
Best day was last week when I went to the Digital Economy Bill unconference at the Showroom. So many people were already aware of NWS News and had kind comments. Everyone was passionate about digital and social media – one of whom assured me that I’m now a bona-fide geek! – and this enthusiasm has rubbed off on me seriously.

Too early to have had a worst day. NWS only started at the beginning of January. Pleased that we’re due to have had over 3,000 page views in our first month – and this is our 100th post! – without any concerted “marketing” of the site. « Read the rest of this entry »

Tempted to borrow to pay off your debts?

January 30th, 2010 § Leave a Comment

January is a long month between paydays for many of us and rolling up outstanding arrears on household bills and unmanageable loan or credit card repayments must be ever more tempting. But be careful, debt consolidation loans won’t suit everyone and they can even prove rather dangerous.

Creditors usually offer debt consolidation loans secured on mortgaged property and they can seem an attractive way of rearranging existing credit repayments down to one lower monthly payment.

Many lenders provide debt consolidation loans to borrowers with equity in their homes and whose household budget shows there is a surplus available each month to service the new loan repayments.

Points to consider
It’s vital to know that failing to make repayments on a secured loan can lead to loss of home through possession proceedings in the county court.

It’s also important to realise that a debt consolidation loan will have to cover existing contractual interest and any early-settlement penalties on loans you want to wrap up in the new agreement – and that the consolidation loan will bring its own interest to inflate the new balance.

Two freezing nights this weekend

January 30th, 2010 § Leave a Comment

Beware freezing temperatures of -4°C this evening and tomorrow night.

Driving conditions will likely become treacherous and pavements are certain to ice up. The *Met Office weather forecast for Sheffield over the rest of the coming week indicates evening temperatures are unlikely to rise above 0°C.

Not so far away, North Yorkshire is experiencing a return of wintry showers.

The weather update section on our sidebar provides the very latest reports.

Scisset Youth Band take centre stage this Sunday 31st January at the Niagara Social Club (near Wadsley Bridge).

Scisset’s concert marks the start of City Of Sheffield Band’s “Band Club” season, which runs from January up to the end of May, with a different brass band playing its own varied programme nearly every Sunday.
